* Once the family out-of-pocket maximum is met, benefits will be paid at 100% for all family members covered under the Plan.

** Maximum Reimbursable Amounts are based on the provider’s normal charge for a similar service or supply and varies by location. Click here for details. Please contact Cigna for more details when necessary. Note that you are responsible for paying the difference between what the provider charges and the Maximum Reimbursable Amount, and these amounts do not apply to your annual out-of-pocket maximum. This is in addition to your coinsurance.

The following table provides an overview of your dental coverage under the Cigna Dental Plan. There are no differences in coverage regardless of whether care is received Internationally or in the U.S. The Plan also covers care from both in- and out-of-network providers (however, for out-of-network care, you’ll be subject to the Maximum Reimbursable Charge*).

Your dental coverage will depend on the type, or class, of the service provided. There are five classes, generally defined as follows:

  • Class I Services – Diagnostic and Preventive
  • Class II Services – Basic Restorations, Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontic Maintenance and Oral Surgery
  • Class III Services – Major Restorations, Dentures and Bridgework
  • Class IV Services – Orthodontics
  • Class V Services – Implants

You will retain home country benefits for Death, Accidental Death & Dismemberment, as well as Short and Long-Term Disability coverage, to the extent that you continue to be eligible while on temporary international assignment. To ensure a minimum level of coverage while on assignment, the Company will provide the following benefits coverage:

  • Life Insurance Benefit: 2x your base pay
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment Benefit: 2x your base pay
  • Short-Term Disability Benefit: Up to 26 weeks at 100% of base pay; and
  • Long-Term Disability Benefit: 60% of base pay1

In general, each of these benefits will be offset by your home country plan, where permissible. If your home country plan benefit exceeds these minimum benefit levels, then you will receive the benefit at the home country level. If your home country does not provide disability benefits at this level, in the event you need to apply for leave, life or disability benefits, please notify Global Mobility so that they may work with Global Benefits and Wellbeing to coordinate coverage.

1 For short term and long-term disability, base pay generally means your annual rate of compensation before any pre-tax deductions, excluding bonuses, overtime, shift differential, incentives, lump-sum merit increases, non-recurring incentives, commissions and sales cash incentives and other forms of special compensation or other extra pay as determined by the company in its sole discretion. For employees located outside the U.S., base pay includes mandatory payments required by law (or customarily included in the determination of annual salary) provided, however, that Merck may in its sole discretion exclude from base pay certain compensation elements, including, but not limited to, allowances, benefits and any lump-sum payments provided locally. Base pay reflects your regularly scheduled hours if a part-time employee. In home countries where disability and life benefits exceed the minimum benefit levels detailed in this Guide, you will receive the home country benefit.

U.S. expats may continue to participate in Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for Health Care and Dependent Care and claim qualifying health and dependent care expenses, even if they are incurred outside of the U.S.

Any claims must be submitted manually via their online account or using the claim forms below, as the Health FSA debit cards do not work outside of the United States.

For a Dependent Care FSA, if care is provided by a foreign caregiver who does not have an SSN or Tax ID #, a statement from the care provider would need to also be provided. All reimbursement requests will be converted to U.S. dollars.

Changes to the FSA can only be made during annual enrollment, or if there is a qualifying life event such as marriage, birth or adoption.

Note: No additional costs would be associated with the account if used outside of the U.S.
